Marriage Green Card Interview: How to Prepare (2026)
Marriage green card interview 2026: what to bring, mistakes that cause denials, common questions, and concierge prep.
📋 Informational · Not legal advice
This article is educational and based on public USCIS information and third-party published policies as of October 13, 2026. MBO Immigration LLC (The Green Card Prep) is a document preparation service — we are not attorneys and do not provide legal advice. USCIS controls timing and outcomes; results vary by case.
Marriage AOS interview confirms a real marriage + consistent file. USCIS decides — not us. Arrive rested, with organized documents and the same story you put on your forms (do not invent dates or details).
What to bring
Originals: marriage, divorces, passports, I-94, petitioner proof of status, joint taxes, new evidence since filing.
Typical questions
How you met, first date, current address, daily routine, in-laws, financial plans.
Mistakes
- Contradictions between I-485 and oral answers.
- No new evidence since filing date.
- Petitioner absent when USCIS requires both spouses.
Client vs concierge
You: truthful answers, originals.
Concierge: review of mailed packet, appointment document list, practice questions — never coaching dishonesty.
USCIS fees: Amounts below follow USCIS’s published fee schedule (April 2024 fee rule, still referenced at uscis.gov/forms/filing-fees and Fee Schedule G-1055). Verified 2026-10-13. If USCIS changes a fee, confirm the current amount on uscis.gov before paying — we do not control government fees.
Interview day — minute by minute
- Arrival: 15–30 minutes early with both spouses if USCIS requires.
- Security: follow building rules.
- Waiting room: phones on silent; documents only.
- Window: officer may swear you in to tell the truth.
- Questions: short and direct; ask to repeat or for interpreter if needed.
- Decision: sometimes immediate, sometimes “still reviewing” or RFE by mail.
After the interview
- Approval: passport or temporary I-551 stamp per case.
- RFE: deadline on letter — complete response or attorney if legal.
- Second interview: bring new evidence and stay consistent.
USCIS decides. Some clients finish soon after interview; others waited 12+ months in earlier or later stages. Results vary.
Binder for interview day
Bring three copies of essentials: marriage cert, I-485 I-797, passports, I-94, recent joint taxes, 10–15 new photos of shared life, current lease, recent bank statements. Original + copy of everything in the initial mailing.
Interpreter and Spanish
You may request an interpreter per USCIS rules. Our prep is in Spanish so you understand answers already on forms — not a substitute for an attorney or official interpreter.
Stokes-style interviews
If fraud is suspected, officers may question spouses separately. Do not invent facts — if you do not recall a date, say so. Stay consistent with I-485 and I-130.
After approval (if USCIS approves)
They may keep the passport for the card, issue a temporary stamp, or mail a request. USCIS decides next steps.
Interview FAQ
Interview fee? No separate USCIS fee for the appointment; you paid I-485 when filing.

Green card timing after approval? 2 months to 12+ months across stages; USCIS controls.
Concierge attend? We do not represent; you may bring an attorney on G-28.

Approval guarantee? No. Nobody can guarantee USCIS.
Sample timeline (illustrative — not a promise)
Maria and Luis (fictional names, educational scenario): marriage to a U.S. citizen, prior B-2 entry, no criminal record. They file I-130 + I-485 in January.
| Month (approx.) | What happens | USCIS form / fee (see note above) |
|---|---|---|
| Month 0 | Concurrent packet mailed | I-130 $675 paper / $625 online · I-485 $1,440 (biometrics included) · I-864 $0 · I-765/I-131 with pending I-485 usually $0 |
| Month 1 | I-797C receipt | — |
| Month 2–3 | Biometrics | Included with I-485 |
| Month 4–8 | EAD/AP if approved | — |
| Month 6–12+ | Interview and decision | USCIS decides |
In this fictional example, if everything goes without an RFE, a card might arrive across a wide range. Some clients have received their green card in as little as 2 months; others 12+ months. USCIS controls timing; results vary.
